Norwegian industrial designer Johan Verde has built a wide-ranging practice across tableware, furniture, clocks and packaging, always returning to geometry as a way of solving form. Since completing his education in 1990, he has developed a body of work defined less by a single visual signature than by a persistent search for precision — an approach he has described in almost obsessive terms. For Stelton, that precision found a particularly clear expression in Capelano, introduced in 2004. The collection stretches cutlery into long, slender proportions, creating a different rhythm around the plate: elegant, pared back and unmistakably graphic. Its shapes were developed for contemporary table settings, where aesthetics and function were intended to move together rather than compete. Verde’s broader design thinking often returns to what he calls “the design of the fold” — the idea of form as something that embraces, encloses and concentrates matter within minimal space. It is a philosophy rooted in protection, structure and movement, and it reveals a designer interested not only in how an object looks, but in how its geometry holds together.
