When designing for the table, the focus is balance, restraint and the feeling of holding something that already belongs in your hand.
The 24-piece Sambonet 100 set translates the collection’s centenary idea into six essential place settings: table knife, fork, spoon and tea spoon for each guest. Repeated around the table, the slender profiles and controlled proportions create a contemporary composition rooted in Sambonet’s long relationship with Italian design.
Much of the effect comes from the slender, subtly arched handle. Rather than lying visually heavy against the table, the form appears light and suspended, while the functional ends provide balance. It is a small structural gesture that gives the collection much of its recognisable character.
The table knife is made as a monobloc piece from a single piece of steel. Sambonet describes this construction as giving the knife a pleasing sense of solidity in the hand. It creates an interesting contrast with the collection’s visually light silhouette: what appears delicate on the table can feel unexpectedly substantial when lifted.
Because when ornament is reduced, the surface becomes more important. Sambonet polishes the stainless steel to a mirror effect that emphasises the purity of the forms while reflecting light and the surrounding table. The decoration is therefore not applied to the object; it comes from whatever happens around it.
Sambonet 100 does not reproduce a historic pattern. Developed by the Sambonet Style Centre and introduced in 2024, it draws on the rigour and ingenuity associated with twentieth-century Italian design while using clean contemporary forms. That forward-looking approach helped earn the collection both the German Design Award and the Tableware International Award of Excellence.
