From Sketch to Table

When designing for the table, the focus is balance, restraint and the feeling of holding something that already belongs in your hand.
Ostfriesen stops feeling like a historical reference and becomes something surprisingly alive. Repeated across a complete table setting, its sweeping contours and intricate damascened decoration create a rhythm that is impossible to achieve with minimalist cutlery. The pattern has been made by Robbe & Berking for almost 150 years, so a fully set table becomes a meeting between contemporary dining and a craft tradition carried through generations.
Because ornament changes through repetition. On one fork or spoon, the eye notices the finely worked decoration. Across a large setting, those details begin to connect visually from one place to the next. What first appears as craftsmanship on an individual handle becomes part of the entire architecture of the table.
Ostfriesen occupies an unusual position. It is the only Robbe & Berking cutlery pattern produced in solid silver, silver-plated and stainless-steel versions. The stainless-steel collection therefore carries essentially the same decorative language associated with traditional silver service, but in a material designed for contemporary everyday use.
Look beyond the overall silhouette and into the damascening of the handles. Robbe & Berking continues to emphasise the craftsmanship required to preserve the pattern down to its smallest nuances. The detail is not simply surface decoration; it is what gives Ostfriesen its identity and connects today's pieces to the long tradition of the Flensburg manufactory.
Ostfriesen can create exactly that impression. Its forms belong to a decorative European table tradition that predates contemporary minimalism, yet the pieces themselves can be newly made in 18/8 stainless steel. The result is a table with the atmosphere of something collected over generations, even when the setting has just been assembled.
