Andrée Putman had a rare ability to make refinement feel effortless. That sensibility is particularly compelling in her interpretation of the Laguiole table knife for Forge de Laguiole. Rather than competing with the history of the Laguiole form, Putman simplifies it. The silhouette is long and elegant, the handle reduced to a clean, continuous gesture, and the traditional language of the knife is allowed to remain visible without becoming nostalgic. In ebony or densified ash, the natural material gives warmth to an otherwise disciplined composition, while the satin-finished metal keeps reflection soft and controlled. The result is a knife that feels unmistakably Laguiole, yet distinctly Putman. Tradition is present in the blade, the craftsmanship and the archetype itself, while the designer’s intervention lies in proportion, surface and restraint. Each handle is shaped by hand at Forge de Laguiole in the village of Laguiole, connecting Putman’s metropolitan design language with the physical craft of the Aubrac workshop. The contrast is what gives the knife its character: an object rooted in regional tradition, interpreted through one of the clearest voices of contemporary French design.

At the table, there is little visual noise. Wood, steel and line are given enough space to speak for themselves.
